Florida Kingfish


In the northern section of Palm Beach, Florida, many fishermen make their way to Jupiter where they stand a chance to catch the majestic thirty pound fish known simply as the kingfish. What a more becoming name for the kings of Florida fish.

The kingfish is a close shore fish which can easily be hooked in local inlets near Jupiter, but after hooking it things get a bit harder. The king will give you a big fight without even mentioning it, on top of that, once you have that king on the line, you have to try and get it onboard as quick as possible. The main reason for this, is that when they finally stop fighting, the sharks, dolphins and porpoises want in on the action.

For the longest time, fishermen in the area would drift net them in bulk until local legislation put an end to the drift net fishing of the majestic kings. The great part about them like mentioned before is that the larger kings like to venture in close to shore. While you can still find the smaller kings in schools found at depths of about 50 to 150 feet.

If you are truly looking for an experience like no other, then why not try for light tackle fishing of the kingfish that have become known as smokers. Smokers are the larger kings that no longer belong to a school, but rather become solitary and barracuda-like. They are often seen skimming through the surf and snagging up their prey at speeds that would make a barracuda tremble.
